The ultimate italian beast could very well be this Alfa Romeo GTV Turbo Gr. 5 (1975), which developed some mad 400bhp for no more than 880kg.
Apparently one of these is now being rebuilt here in Portugal, which makes me very happy to think that it might return to racing sometime this year.
