Pedro Down By Three at Daytona 71:
At around 11 a.m. on Sunday morning at the 1971 24 Hours of Daytona this Pedro Rodriguez - Jackie Oliver Gulf 917K had a tremendous lead. Then the transmission crapped out, stuck in high gear. Regs. wouldn’t permit a swap so they rebuilt it in 92 minutes. By then they had lost their lead to the Ronnie Bucknum - Tony Adamowicz NART Ferrari 512S. Those guys were now three laps in the lead. Rodriguez was told to put his foot to the floor and beat Ferrari. He did and eventually won by one lap on the ailing Ferrari. The closest finish at Daytona up until that time. This was also the last year for the big 5-liter 917’s and 512’s. An end of an era. I took this photo between turns two and three on the old infield course.
