DeLorean DMC-12 (1981)
Designed to fulfill the dream of a very ambitious man, and also to be better than the Chevrolet Corvette. John Z. DeLorean, manager at GM, was convinced he could build a car from scratch that would be better than the contemporary Corvete at several aspects. And he nearly did.
What many people don’t know is that the DMC-12 shares a lot of similarities with the Lotus Esprit (besides having the same designer). This is because DeLorean asked the lads from Lotus to give him a hand with the production process. Like many other Lotuses, the DMC-12 also featured a steel backbone chassis to increase rigidity.
About 8500 cars were produced.

Prototype. Check out the back bumper. Apparently they were experimenting with different designs. Also, interesting wheels. Also note the sliding window, gas flap on the left fender, and slightly narrower rear quarter windows.

Perks of owning a DeLorean: Driving it to college when daily driver is in the shop for a week and finding a note on the windshield from a photographer asking to take pics of the car. It was a fun day, although this is the only picture I have seen so far from the set of 100+
If only DMC was still around. Maybe on yesterday’s top gear they could have tested the Maserati QP, the Aston Rapide, Porsche Panamera, and a modern version of this concept…
See that car there? Over 230,000 miles on it, and it looks and runs just as good as the one next to it with 20,000 miles. So much for that public perception that these cars are extremely unreliable pieces of shit. You show me a ford taurus with 230,000 miles on it that is in as good a condition as a 20,000 mile one…
