Lotus 80 (1979, Monaco) When Chapman designed the Lotus 80, he wanted to take the ground effect (which had worked brilliantly in the 79) a level further. The whole car was designed to work like a huge wing, developing massive amounts of downforce. In theory, it should have been great — but it wasn’t. Andretti found it to be undriveable, and for the rest of the season Lotus were back to the good ol’ 79.
